TRAPYLEN® 189 S: New adhesion promoter for printing inks with an ECHA-compliant stabilizer
Tornesch, March 2025
TRAMACO is launching TRAPYLEN® 189 S, a newly developed adhesion promoter designed specifically for use in printing inks—particularly in screen printing. This chlorinated polypropylene features an ECHA-compliant stabilizer and offers a wide range of application and processing possibilities in plastic coating and solvent-based adhesives.
Product Features and Benefits
- High compatibility and excellent pigment wetting properties: TRAPYLEN® 189 S ensures excellent adhesion while also providing high gloss and good weather resistance.
- Versatile Applications: In addition to its use as a binder for printing inks (especially screen printing), TRAPYLEN® 189 S can also be used as a tackifier in plastic coatings and solvent-based adhesives (including those based on NR/SBR and polychloroprene).
- Proven adhesion to polypropylene, PP/EPDM, and thermoplastic rubbers: Limited adhesion to polyethylene is also possible.
- Resistance to Grease and Oil: For more demanding applications, TRAPYLEN® 189 S can be combined with other TRAPYLEN® grades that have a lower chlorine content.

Processing and Application
1. Protection from moisture and sunlight
To ensure product quality, direct sunlight and humidity should be avoided. TRAPYLEN® 189 S is also available in a pre-dissolved form if needed.
2. Solubility and Solution Recommendations
- Soluble in aromatic solvents, ethyl acetate, and ketones.
- Insoluble in aliphatic compounds and alcohols.
- Preparation of the Solution: First, pour the solvent into a suitable container. Then add TRAPYLEN® 189 S while stirring (using a dissolver). Shear force causes the resin to dissolve; the temperature should rise to approximately 60 °C and be maintained at that level for about 3 hours. Afterward, the solids content is adjusted to the desired concentration by adding additional solvent, and the mixture is filtered.
3. Addition Amount and Further Processing
The required amount to be added to the main matrix must be determined on a case-by-case basis through appropriate testing.
Screen-printing varnish: The typical application rate is 3–4 g/m²; drying time is approximately 30 seconds at 80 °C.
